Head hunt: Jamia seeks new V-C

Following the elevation of Najeeb Jung to the post of Lieutenant Governor of Delhi, speculations are rife over who will replace him as vice-chancellor of Jamia Millia Islamis university.
Professor Zoya Hasan of the Jawaharlal Nehru University and professor Seyed Ehtesham Hasnain of the Indian Institute of Technology-Delhi (IIT) have emerged as front runners for the post. Sources from Jamia on the condition of anonymity confessed that the two names that have emerged as front-runners for the post are those of professor Zoya Hasan and professor Seyed Ehtesham Hasnain.
Hasan is the wife of former Jamia V-C Mushir-ul-Hasan. If she gets the position, it would be the first instance of a woman occupying the post.
Hasan is an Indian academic and a political scientist. She is currently a professor of political science and the dean of School of Social Sciences at the Jawaharlal Nehru University and a former member of the National Commission for Minorities. Seyed Ehtesham Hasnain is a professor of Biological Sciences at the Indian Institute of Technology-Delhi (IIT), an academician, science policy advisor and institution builder based in Delhi.

Khalid Naem, dean of engineering at JMI said, ‘On 4 July we will have a meeting of executive council members of Jamia Millia Islamia to decide on two names, known as search committee members.

The names will be sent to the President, who will forward it to the ministry of human resource development, which will approve one of the names V-C of Jamia. Those at the 4 July meeting will include four executive council members from Jamia, two senior-most Jamia associate professors, and one or two senior members from the central government of India.'

Jamia Millia Islamia vice-chancellor Najeeb Jung was on Monday appointed Delhi Lieutenant Governor. He had served Jamia as  the V-C for the past five years.
