HC notice to Delhi govt, North MCD over illegal animal slaughter

The Delhi high court on Wednesday issued notices to the Delhi government, North Delhi Municipal Corporation and the SHO Sadar Bazar police station on a public interest litigation seeking immediate closure of alleged illegal running of an illegal abattoir  at Idgah near Sadar Bazar in North Delhi despite shifting of the facility from there to Ghazipur in East Delhi in 2009.

A division Bench of Chief Justice G Rohini and  Justice Jayant Nath asked the three respondents to file replies to the petition filed by an NGO by September 2.

The petitioner through its lawyer Deepankar Mohan submitted that every day hundreds of animals were slaughtered at the illegal slaughter house located in a residential area. He further submitted that the people engaged in this illegal business wrap it up by early morning and later the civic body’s vehicles clean up the place every day, leaving no clues to the illegal activities.

He further submitted that there were three check posts in the area, yet vehicles loaded with animals arrived at the illegal slaughter house and customers carried back the final products without any hindrance. He alleged connivance of the municipal officials and local police personnel with the culprits. The petitioner also submitted photographs and video clippings in support of their allegations to the court.
