HC halts Manjhi’s largesse spree

In a major setback to incumbent Bihar Chief Minister Jitan Ram Manjhi, the Patna High Court has restricted Manjhi from showering largesse before proving his strength on floor of the house. The Manjhi government has to prove its majority in the House on Feb 20. With this order of the HC, the Manjhi government’s decision to add Paswan community to the ‘Mahadalit’ category stands cancelled.

Also, the Manjhi Cabinet’s approval, in principle, to appoint ‘Vikas Mitra’ among Scheduled Tribe families to speed up welfare of STs in numerous programmes will also be put on hold.

Notably, the Manjhi government had on Saturday sanctioned the proposal to include Paswan caste in the Mahadalit category. The decision taken at a special meeting of the Cabinet was aimed at wooing Union Minister Ram Vilas Paswan’s LJP. The Paswan caste had been left out of the Mahadalit category during former CM Nitish Kumar’s time when he had constituted a Mahadalit commission. Paswan had expressed resentment over Kumar’s decision to not include the members of his caste in the
Mahadalit category.

Meanwhile, the BJP stayed away from the crucial all-party called by Bihar assembly speaker Uday Narain Choudhary on Monday. “The BJP didn’t attend the meet as Nand Kishore Yadav, was invited as leader of BJP Legislature Party instead of Leader of Opposition,” a senior BJP leader told
