‘Happy that audience has accepted me as new Byomkesh’

Jisshu Sengupta, who played Byomkesh Bakshi in director Anjan Dutt’s new eponymous film on the exploits of Bengal’s favourite sleuth, said he was happy that the movie became a hit.

He said that he had doubts whether he could do justice to the character with all its nuances, but he could now say that the audience had accepted him.

Jisshu, who starred in in the super hit Hindi film “Piku”, said he was grateful to Anjan for giving him the role.

“I had once told him if I can be his next Byomkesh and see I got a call from him, though much later,” the actor said.

Anjan said, “I told Jisshu I did not want another Abir Chatterjee as Byomkesh. Instead of the intellectual appearance and Bengaliness, I wanted a sharper Byomkesh who is more desperate and a bit restless.”

Anjan’s previous Byomkesh films had Abir Chatterjee in the role of the famous detective, whose exploits were also turned into a Bollywood film by Dibakar Banerjee.

Turning to the chemistry between Byomkesh and his man friday Ajit, Anjan said, “This time my new Bomkesh (Jisshu) and Ajit (Saswata Chatterjee) are more friendly in real life than Abir and Saswata previously. So that obviously helped.”
