Govt woos OBCs

With an eye on the 2014 General Election and to tap the Other Backward Classes (OBC) vote bank, the government on Friday decided to reserve 27 per cent share in the allotment of new petrol pumps for the OBCs. 'The selection process of retail outlets (RO) i.e. Petrol Pump dealership has been revised. It has now been decided to give 27 per cent reservation to OBC candidates in allotment of RO dealership,' said the official statement.

Also to bring in transparency in allotment of petrol pumps, the allotment will now be made through draw of lots instead of personal interviews as was the norm earlier. 'These changes are expected to make the RO allotment in tune with our social objectives and higher standards of transparency,' said that official statement. This decision was made after three rounds of meeting with state-run oil marketing companies.

Presently, 25 per cent of the pumps are reserved for Scheduled Castes (SC) and Scheduled Tribes (ST), which will now be brought down to 22.5 per cent. The other 25 per cent quota is kept for physically challenged persons, defence personnel, freedom fighters and outstanding sports persons, taking the overall reservation to 50 per cent. Now, the physically challenged, and defence personnel, freedom fighters and outstanding sports persons will also get reservation in each of the three categories – SC/ST, OBC and General.

The other crucial change in the allotment process is that the candidates will not be ranked according to their educational qualification, financial background and similar criteria.
