Govt set to begin consultative process for comm varsity at IIMC

The government will soon begin the consultative process in pursuance of establishing a communications university at the IIMC here that would function as an umbrella body dealing with a range of domains from print media, radio and television to animation.

As an initial step towards creating such a university, holding a national-level seminar at the Indian Institute of Mass Communication (IIMC), is being considered, senior officials said. “A national-level seminar involving various stakeholders, where deliberations will soon be held on issues related to communication education in the country at the IIMC. The deliberations in the seminar are expected to provide important inputs for the creation of a communication university,” a senior official said. The Information and Broadcasting Ministry is learnt to have given itself an internal target of three years to establish the university, the idea for which is said to have come from Prime Minister Narendra Modi himself.

A senior official said while there are examples like the Communication University of China, which
covers a range of domains from journalism, communication, radio, film, TV to arts, the model for the proposed university will be drawn only after studying the requirements in Indian context.
