Govt schools to organise mega PTM today

The Delhi Government will organise a mega parent-teacher meeting (PTM) in thousands of schools run by it on Saturday. The PTM is being organised after a similar exercise was carried out two months  ago. The move aims to improve the overall performance of students studying in government schools.

The Delhi government has asked all teachers in its schools to use “positive” terminology while giving feedback to parents. 

In the first PTM held on July 30, parents of at least 70 per cent students turned up at schools – many for the first time. However, a student’s suicide after her parents revceived bad feedback in the PTM, was held against the event itself.

“Every student is gifted with some positive and constructive attributes. To nurture cordial relations with students and their parents, the teachers need to identify and highlight such positive traits. It may also be ensured that teachers use positive terminology when they give feedback to the parents about children. Phrases like ‘can perform better’, ‘has the potential to achieve more’, etc., may encourage parents to pay more attention to the studies of their wards,” a circular issued to schools by the Directorate of Education (DoE) said.

More than 1,000 government-run schools will hand out progress report cards to parents on Saturday, while apprising them about their child’s performance. The DoE had issued detailed instructions to the heads of schools to conduct teaching-learning assessment before the PTMs.

“Principals have been asked to conduct teaching-learning assessment in schools. They have also been directed to sit in classes, ensure that teachers are audible, monitor the process and discuss with students their progress,” a DoE official said.

The focus of this PTM will be on sharing results of the first-term exams held since the government started its ambitious Chunauti 2018 scheme to improve learning levels and taking feedback from parents.

For morning shift schools, the PTM will be held between 8 am to 1 pm and for evening shift schools, it will be held between 2 pm to 7 pm.

“Teachers have also been asked to brief the parents about the no-detention policy and show the answersheets of students if the parents ask for it,” the official added.

“Preparations for the report card are on in full swing. Children have made special invite cards for their parents, and all principals have sent out sms invites. A personal invitation has been sent to all parents by Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia through a recorded audio message,” a Delhi Government statement said.
