Global slowdown prompts apparel export council to hold fair to lure foreign buyers

Apparel exports body AEPC has organised a three-day fair 'Market Days' to attract overseas buyers and boost exports in the wake of global demand slowdown.

'It is one of the endeavours for AEPCs export promotion initiatives for the year 2012-13 wherein we are hopeful that the apparel exporters will generate good business deals with buyers from different countries,' AEPC chairman A Sakthivel said.

Over 100 exhibitors from countries like Australia, South Africa, Greece and the US are participating in the event that started on Monday.

Some of the leading buying agents like UCB, Numero Uno, Reebok, are also present, he said.

The initiative was funded under the Market Access Initiative (MAI) scheme of Ministry of Commerce and Industry for inviting overseas buyers and buying agents.

The event would help the garment exporters find the right partners for their business, he added. The Apparel Export Promotion Council (AEPC) will organise another similar fair in the coming months.Sakthivel said that over 20 overseas buyers from nine companies and 21 buying agents visited the last fair and business worth about USD 4 million was finalised.India is unlikely to meet the apparel exports target of USD 18 billion for 2012-13 due to demand slowdown in major markets like the US and Europe.
