GJM supporters attack Harka Bahadur Chhetri

Trinamool Congress candidate from Kalimpong Assembly constituency Harka Bahadur Chhetri was allegedly attacked on Wednesday night at Chinadome area at Kalimpong on East main Road by some supporters and leaders of Gorkha Janmukti Morcha (GJM). When contacted, Chhetri said that the incident took place when he was returning after attending an election campaign. Some leaders of GJM including a councillor of Kalimpong Municipality Barun Bhujel and his brother put up a road block on East Main Road. Knowing that Chhetri would return from that route, they purposely put up the road block to harass him. The GJM supporters pelted stones at Chetri’s car. He remained inside the car till the police reached the spot and dispersed the mob.

Chhetri later said that he had received a call from a woman from the area where the road block was going on. “The caller, who stays alone as her husband works with the Indian Army, informed him that some GJM supporters have been threatening her with dire consequences if she casts her vote in favour of Chhetri. They are going door-to-door to threaten my supporters in the area,” Chhetri said adding that he had immediately contacted the inspector-in-charge (IC) of the local police station after the woman called him. The IC set out for the spot soon after receiving the information. But Chhetri reached the place before police and GJM supporters allegedly attacked him. Chhetri assured the electorates from the area that they would not face any untoward incident if they cast their votes in his favour. He also took up the matter to the election commission.
