Girl, brother assaulted after protesting eve-teasing; accused held

A teenage girl who was riding her scooty with her younger brother in the pillion was thrashed by a youth who was travelling in a car. The victim’s brother also received injuries on his face when he tried to save the girl.

Police have taken a prompt action and arrested the accused from Jalpaiguri. The accused have been identified as Bikramjit Saha alias Bunty.

Police came to know that the accused has committed such incidents in the past as well.

The victim, the daughter of a doctor received injuries on her cheek after she received several punches from the accused. The victim’s brother has alleged that the accused youth was travelling in a car and was continuously teasing the girl. When his elder sister sped up her scooty, the youth also accelerated.

Few minutes later, the vehicle overtook the scooty and stopped in front of it at Kadamtala More under Kotwali police station in Jalpaiguri.

The incident occurred on Thursday morning. The accused came out of the vehicle and hurled abusive comments at her.

When she protested, he punched her on her face. She fell on the ground. Her brother who came to her rescue was also beaten up by the accused.

The accused fled the spot before the local people intervened.

The victim’s brother, however, managed to take down the number of the vehicle and later handed it over to the police.

They later took the victims to a local health centre for treatment.

A question arises here as to why the local residents did not come on time to save the two victims.

The whole incident occurred in the broad daylight in a populated area.

The local people said that before they could understand anything, the accused had injured the victims
and fled the spot.

After being informed, the police reached the spot and started an investigation. They took prompt action and arrested the accused within few hours of the incident.

It was learnt that the accused has admitted his guilt in the face of the interrogation.
