Ghazipur plant to miss deadline again

Missing deadlines for major projects seems to have become a trend. The latest project to miss the deadline is the waste-to-energy plant at Ghazipur.

The plant, which was supposed to start operations in July, is all set to miss its third deadline. ‘The waste-to-energy plant at Ghazipur which was to get operational by July end is now expected to start producing fuel by September. The power production is expected to commence only by March 2014,’ said a senior officer of East Delhi Waste Processing Company (EDWPC) which is constructing the plant.

EDWPC is a joint venture between the Delhi government and Infrastructure Leasing and Financial Services (IL&FS).

Earlier, the company had set a deadline to start the production of fuel from municipal waste that it gets from East Delhi Municipal Corporation (EDMC at the plant in April 2013 but the deadline was postponed to July 2013.

According to sources, the energy production unit of the plant is still under construction which was to start its trial run in September.

The plant missed its first deadline of September 2011 because the then private partner of the EDWPC quit the project. The government then entered into an agreement with IL&FS in 2011 and set the first deadline to start fuel production by April 2013.
