Gangster Abu Salem attacked inside Taloja jail in Mumbai

Gangster Abu Salem, an accused in the 1993 Mumbai blasts case, was today attacked inside Taloja Central Jail in neighbouring Navi Mumbai, police said.

According to police sources, Salem was attacked by a person, presumably an inmate, identified as Jagtap. The jail officials did not disclose the nature of injuries sustained by Salem. This is the second attack on Salem inside a jail after he was deported from Portugal in 2005. He had faced attack at the Arthur Road jail here in 2010. Salem, who was deported from Portugal, has been lodged here for the past two years. He was extradited in 2005 for his alleged role in the 1993 Mumbai serial blasts which left 257 dead and 713 injured. During the process of extradition, India had given executive assurances to Portugal that they would not slap any charge, which would have the death penalty. They had also given assurances that he would not keep him behind bars for more than 25 years.
