Gang of cable robbers busted, wires worth Rs 1L recovered

With the arrest of four persons, police on Monday claimed to have busted a gang, which used to steal live cables of Delhi Metro and recovered wire worth around Rs 1 lakh from their possession.

The presence of the gang came to light in the wee hours of Friday when a security guard approached a police patrolling team and reported about the  thieves whom he had seen climbing the metro flyover of the airport express line near Buddha Gardens in South Delhi, said a police official.

The accused — two of them spotted on the flyover and other two standing near a pillar underneath — fled the spot as soon as they sensed police presence in the area.

Soon the police team launched a search operation and two of the accused, identified as Raj Kumar and Yusuf were nabbed from a forested area there, said the official.

The police also recovered around 20 metre-long cable worth around Rs 1 lakh, which the accused had dropped at the spot, and a wire cutter from the duo’s possession, the official said.

During interrogation, they disclosed identities of their associates and two more identified as Raees and Rohit were arrested. All four accused are residents of a slum cluster at Rangpuri Pahadi in South Delhi, police added.
