Gang of auto lifters, snatchers busted

A gang of three auto lifters-cum-chain snatchers was busted by Anti Auto Theft Squad [AATS], south-east district on Monday, said police.

‘These robbers used to snatch chains in a car, instead of using a bike like others. They first used to steal the car and use it for  snatching,’ said an official.

‘Fifteen cases of auto lifting and five cases of snatching have been solved with their arrest. Police has recovered four stolen vehicles, parts of 14 dismantled cars, four gold chains and various equipment used in dismantling and cutting cars,’ said Ajay Choudhary, Additional Commissioner, south-east district.

‘Mohammad Arif [37], one of the accused and the mastermind of the gang, is a close associate of Anil Chauhan, the notorious auto lifter. Arif came into contact with Anil when he was in jail. Anil acted like his guru and taught him the skills of key making and auto lifting,’ he added.

The duo then separated and Arif formed his own gang. ‘On Thursday, AATS received a tip off that Arif and his associate Islam [27] are in Okhla Mandi to deliver a stolen Tata Safari. A team was dispatched and the duo was apprehended. Two snatched gold chains were also recovered on cursory search,’ said Choudhary.

‘On interrogation Arif disclosed that he along with his associate Islam used to steal vehicles and commit snatching. Their other associate Vipin [33],  who used to dismantle stolen vehicles, has also been arrested. Another accused Usman, who used to sell parts to scrap dealers in UP, is still at large,’ he added.

‘Arif and Islam used to take Rs 25,000 for every delivery and Vipin used to take Rs 10,000 for dismantling the vehicle,’ said an official.

In some cases, they also used to change the chassis and engine number and sell it with an available old Registeration Certificate [RC] to earn extra money. All three accused are residents of UP.
