Four sentenced for selling infants

A man and his wife running a placement agency have been sentenced by a Delhi court to three years in jail each for selling a rape victim’s infant child to a social worker, who too was jailed for the same term.

Additional Sessions Judge Kamini Lau also sentenced another man, who had raped the minor girl and whose child was sold by the couple to the social worker for Rs 23,000.

The court also imposed a fine of Rs 1 lakh on rapist Man Mohan, who worked as a driver in a house, where the 17-year-old girl from Jharkhand had been sent to work as domestic aide by couple Vinod and Preeti.

The couple, who ran a placement agency ‘Adivasi Sewa Samiti’ had sold the male infant to social worker Santosh Sharma in August 2007. The whole racket had been exposed by a news channel in a sting operation.

According to the police, as the girl started working at a house here, but returned to the placement agency after her rape and gave birth to the child. She had told the police that during the delivery, she became unconscious and when she regained her consciousness, she was told by Vinod and Preeti that she had given birth to a dead child but later, she came to know that her new born baby was sold by the couple to Santosh Sharma for Rs 23,000.

‘It has been held that the prosecution has been able to prove and substantiate the allegations against accused Vinod, Preeti and Santosh of having kidnapped the newly born male child of the girl and having secretly and wrongfully confined the child for which they have been held guilty...,’ said ASJ Lau.

The journalist, who had conducted the sting operation, had informed Saraswati Vihar police station about the rape of the girl after which the police reached at the spot and quizzed the victim.
