Four men shoot traffic cop, escape

A 40-year old traffic police constable, who was given the VIP route beat in north-west Delhi’s Welcome area was shot at from a close range by unidentified persons on Thursday night.

Ravindra, 40, had apparently tried to intervene among a group of young men who were having a fight, when one of them suddenly fired at him.

He was passing through Jafrabad tent gali on his bike at around 10 pm, when he heard a commotion. When he saw four men exchanging heated arguments, Ravinder got down from his bike and tried to pacify. He was told not to butt in. But the victim still made efforts to intervene and sort out the matter. At this point, one of the men allegedly took out a pistol and fired at Ravinder. He was shot in the chest. The four men fled the spot. According to the police, the incident was reported from Welcome metro station at 8 pm when constable Ravinder was returning to the quarters behind the police station after completing his duty.

‘Ravinder saw that a group of 3-4 young boys were fighting each other. He tried to intervene to sort out the matter but one of the men fired at him,’ a senior police officer said. Ravinder reportedly sustained injuries in the left side of his chest and started bleeding profusely. He was rushed to GTB hospital and is recuperting. Police said he is stable and is fit for statement.

‘The hunt to identify and arrest the accused is on,’ said an official. The official also said that a case under relevant sections of the IPC has been registered and the investigation is underway.
