Four held for raping woman in Beniapukur hotel

Four men, including the prime accused, have been arrested for raping a woman in a hotel in Beniapukur, after she was lured with the promise of a lucrative job.

The accused were arrested Thursday night and booked under relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code at Beniapukur Police Station.

Police said CCTV footage from the hotel was instrumental in finding the trail of the incident.

The prime accused, Chittaranjan Patra – a resident of Odisha – had initially befriended the victim through a social networking website.

Patra posed as a manager of a private company based in Kolkata and had long conversations with her.

Eventually, he convinced her of offering a job in his fake company.

Patra invited the girl to a hotel in Beniapukur for an interview, assuring her that she will later get the job. He also told her that he would be among the interviewers.

On Wednesday, Patra took the woman to room F-4 of Hotel Marina and raped her.

After the accused left the hotel, the girl lodged a complaint with the Beniapukur Police station on Wednesday night.

The accused were arrested on Thursday night, soon after police started the investigation.

A police team went to Sonagachi – the city’s red light area – and nabbed Patra, along with three other accused who helped him commit the crime. Suryakanta Das, Prabhat Sahoo and Satyarup Sahoo were the other arrested men.

Police said the hotel room, which was used by the accused, was booked in the name of one S Sahoo. This person happens to be Satyarup Sahoo, who happens to be an employee of the hotel.

“The hotel employee helped Patra to commit the crime. He gave his confession before the Sealdah court. We have booked the accused under sections 376 and 120B of the Indian Penal Code,” said a police officer.

Meanwhile, police are still examining the CCTV footage, which shows that Patra had taken the girl to the room.

“We have other footage which will uncover more evidence against the offenders,” the officer said.
