Former Calcutta HC Chief Justice new state human rights body chairman

Girish Chandra Gupta, the former Chief Justice of the Calcutta High Court, has been finalised to be appointed as the next Chairman of the State Human Rights Commission.

He was selected anonymously with Abdul Mannan, Leader of the Opposition, also giving his concent to appoint the former Chief Justice Gupta as the next Chairman of the Commission.

Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, who is the chairperson of the committee to select the chairman of the State Human Rights Commission, and two other members of the committee - Abdul Mannan, Leader of the Opposition, and Speaker of the state Assembly Biman Bandyopadhyay – held a meeting in this regard in the Speaker’s chamber in the Assembly on Friday.

Former Justice Gupta will be succeeding Naparajit Mukherjee, who had been appointed in the post after Justice (Retd) Ashok Ganguly had resigned.

Mukherjee had retired as Director General of Police in September 2014. Mukherjee will continue to be a member of the Commission.
