Folk singer tries to end life, condition stable

A famous Haryana folk singer allegedly tried to end her life by consuming poison on Sunday. Sources said the singer, Sapna Chaudhary, was depressed as two cases were registered against her for hurting the sentiments of a Dalit community during a stage performance in February this year. Based on the complaints filed by Dalit activists, the Gurgaon police had registered an FIR against her and had also set up an SIT to probe the allegations.

A complaint was also registered against her in Hisar, where she performed on a controversial song, which allegedly hurt the sentiments of two Dalit sects. An FIR was registered in Gurgaon in July this year.

Sources said before attempting suicide, the singer apologised, promising that she won’t perform on the song again. She is admitted to a private hospital in Najafgarh. Doctors described her condition as stable. A case has been registered at the Chhawla police station.
