Flooding submerges bridge over Khari river

Traffic movement was closed on the Burdwan-Katwa road after a road bridge over river Khari got over-flooded due to heavy rain. The block development officer rushed to the spot to oversee the situation and imposed restriction on the plying of vehicles on the road. He asked the Bhatar police to restrict the vehicles from entering into the road.

A police picket has been set up near the bridge that had gone under water to avoid any untoward incidents. The bridge was constructed after another bridge at the same place collapsed in 2014 while a loaded truck was crossing it.

Following the incident, the road was closed for more than one month. The state public works department had constructed the alternative bridge on the river so that the vehicles can ply on it. But in last few years it has been observed that this bridge was getting over flooded. As a result of this the bridge was gradually getting weak.

The PWD department had constructed the new bridge at the place of the old one at an approximate cost of Rs 13 crore around 10 months ago.

The local people said that nothing had changed as the new bridge also goes under water during monsoon when there is an over flood in the river. They also demanded a permanent solution to it.
After being informed the local BDO Pralay Mondal had rushed to the spot on Friday morning and asked to close down the road after assessing the whole situation.
