Five killed, many injured in separate road accidents

Five persons were killed and many others were injured in separate road accidents across the state on Sunday.

In the first incident, three persons were killed and one person suffered serious injury when the car they were travelling in lost control and rammed into a truck from behind at Dadpur area on Durgapur Expressway. The victims have been identified as Prasad Ganguly (48), Pritam Gupta (23) and Chandrajit Basak (50). Prabal Ganguly who was also travelling in the car received serious injuries in the accident and is undergoing treatment at Imambara Sadar Hospital.

In the other incident, two cyclists died after a police van hit them near Malbazar in Siliguri. Local people alleged that the driver of the police vehicle was in an inebriated state and they staged protests on National Highway 31 demanding the arrest of the accused driver. Police have started an investigation in this regard.

Police said that Prasad Ganguly, an astrologer was going to Durgapur from Baranagar in North 24 Parganas to meet some of his clients. They were travelling in a Maruti van. Chandrajit Basak was driving the vehicle at the time of the accident. When the car was crossing Dadpur area in Hooghly, it lost its control and hit a truck from behind. 

The local people said that the car was going at top speed. The driver applied the brakes when he saw a truck taking a turn in an intersection but he could not control the vehicle and it eventually rammed into the truck. The local people rushed to the spot and took part in the rescue operation. Police rushed the injured to the hospital where the three were declared brought dead while one person is undergoing treatment in the hospital.

In another incident, two persons were injured when a car lost control and rammed into a divider near Fort William. Three persons including the driver were injured in the incident and they were taken to the SSKM Hospital for treatment. Seven persons who were travelling in a bus were injured when the bus hit an electric post in Burdwan this morning due to fog.
