First global travel mart in Northeast announced

The Assam capital will host the first ever International Tourism mart between 18 and 20 January, Union Minister of State for Tourism K Chiranjeevi announced in the Capital on Thursday.

Apart from the Seven Sisters of the Northeast — the collective name given to the states of Assam, Tripura, Manipur, Mizoram, Nagaland, Arunachal Pradesh, Meghalaya and Sikkim — West Bengal has also been included as part of the tourism expo in Guwahati ‘considering the contagious features of regions in West Bengal with the Northeast,’ the minister announced.

‘This is the first-ever international tourism event to be organised in the northeast region. Moreover, this is also the first international tourism mart to focus on a specific region of India,’ said Chiranjeevi. ‘We want to highlight the tourism potential of the region in domestic and international markets,’ Chiranjeevi said.

The event will bring together tourism business fraternity as well as entrepreneurs from the Northeast and from West bengal. Buyers from across the world are also expected to take part. ‘We want to facilitate interaction between the buyers and sellers, media, government agencies and others,’ he added. The ministry also reportedly spent around Rs 1.8 crores on the mart and the Assam government too is spending more than that amount.

Around 100 delegates from ASEAN countries, Bangladesh, Bhutan, Japan, Korea, Australia, France, Germany, Italy, Switzerland, UK and the US have confirmed their participation. The overseas delegates include six tourism secretaries, 63 tour operators, seven hoteliers and media representatives. Ministers from several countries will also participate.

The three-day event will include presentations, cultural evenings, familiarisation tours around Guwahati and various parts of the Northeast including the Kaziranga forest. Cultural evenings will see performances by Shillong’s Lou Majaw and Debojit Saha among others. A blog on the event has also been operational since last December.
