Finance Min turns into fortress ahead of Budget

The ministry has asked its officials to be “strict and mandatory” in providing escort for outsiders or visitors to make it certain that the outsiders goes to the designated officer, whom he or she is looking for.

Sources said, there was some resentment among a section of senior officials whose food packets are even made to pass through multiple screening including “sniffer dogs”. Unlike previous regime, this year only five top brass of the finance ministry are allowed to enter the restricted area mainly of the revenue department’s Central Board of Direct Taxes and Central Board of Excise and Customs.

Since, these boards have major impact on the economy through direct and indirect tax provisions, only few with separate biometric cards were allowed to enter these zones. Earlier, during UPA regime 16 officials were allowed to enter the zone, but this time with possible budget leaks, the new government has restricted it to only five.

“Considering the confidentiality of the Union Budget, this time we have strengthened our system and entrusted tried team of efficient officers. But despite that there movement will be closely monitored and counter intelligence mechanism was implemented to contain any leaks,” sources in the ministry said.
