Female foetus dumped next to drain

On Mother's Day, a five-month-old female foetus was found on the roadside. Dogs were apparently fighting over the foetus when it was found in the D-Block of Nathupura situated in the north west district of the capital on Sunday morning.

A passerby, who came to invest the unusually loud barking of the dogs, found the foetus in a pool of blood adjacent to a drain. He had informed the police and had managed to keep the dogs away from the foetus until they arrived.

'We have sent the foetus for post mortem. After the autopsy report, the exact age of the female foetus will be clarified', said a senior police officer. He added that the investigation is on to identify the parents.

After the first episode of Satyamev Jayte, which focussed on female foeticide, the district administration of Gurgaon, on Wednesday last, had started a dedicated helpline to register complaints against female foeticide. It was also decided that the special task force would keep a record of every hospital and clinic where pregnant woman goes for their general ultrasound during their pregnancy. The district administration had instructed radiologists that ultrasound could be done only in a few prescribed centres. In Gurgaon, there are 135 ultrasound centres, including four government centres.

That while these major steps are being taken to curb female foeticide, a female foetus should be found, and on Mother's day could only mean that a lot still needs to be done.  Also, on Saturday, a five-day-old infant girl was abandoned by her parents in Gurgaon. It was the third case in Gurgaon, when a new born girl was abandoned by their parents. On Thursday, a two-day-old girl was left by her parents on the roadside in Janakpuri area. In all these cases, the respective parents were not identified as yet.
