Jskanwal's journey of printmaking

An exhibition of prints has been organised at Triveni Kala Sangam, New Delhi from May 15 – 24, 2019. Aptly titled 'Introspection', the current exhibition of printmaker Jskanwal bears evidence of the three decades spent by her, in the practice of printmaking.

These formative years of her art training, which has led a rare finesse in her art, bears credit to her years of training under the famed and independent minded printmaker Jagmohan Chopra, who had set the pace of printmaking on an indigenous footing. An alumni of the Government College of Art, Chandigarh, Jaskanwal's current exhibition is a landmark solo show of her career and contains a cache of fifty selected works.

At the very first glance, this exhibition stands out for its freshness of approach, its novelty of technique and its clarity of emotional expression. The tones in the colours of her art, are a true definition of the word 'muted'. With a dominance of earth-brown, dusky yellow and a grey-blue tinge, arranged in solid formations that resemble a rock solid contour, the forms overlap and merge, yet remain distinct and explicit, without being overbearing. The many layers of the tones, coupled with the graphic format, become a way of expressing her emotions, according to the art maker.

A nature lover and keen observer of life around in her natural surroundings, Jaskanwal has depicted her thoughts and observances on nature into her art in a truly unique way. Each colour depicts a form, a familiar recall from nature, that triggers an emotional journey in our minds. A printmaker with a difference, she does not use conventional methods to create her works, either.
