IEI opens Kattankulathur Local Centre in SRM

The Kattankulathur Local Centre of The Institute of Engineers (India) was opened by Founder Chancellor of SRM Institute of Science and Technology, Dr T R Paarivendhar, MP at the Institute's premises, recently.

Maj Gen Dr S Bhattacharya, VSM (Retd), Secretary and Director-General, The Institution of Engineering (India) read the Warrant of Establishment and Er R Ramdoss, FIE, Chairman IEI, Tamil Nadu State Centre handed it over to Dr PT Ravichandran, the first Chairman of Kattankulathur Local Centre. IEI also presented a cheque of Rs 1.5 lakhs towards the development of the Centre.

In his welcome address, R Ramdoss said that this will be the 124 centre in India and will have over 400 members as of now.

In his acceptance speech, Dr PT Ravichandran said, "I am proud to be the first president of this chapter. Our Chancellor is the architect of SRMIST and under this guidance and support, I assure you that we will take this Centre to greater heights."

"What I am is because of AIME," said Dr T R Paarivendhar. In his special address, he mentioned that AIME was a turning point in his life.

"Now I am happy that Kattankulathur Local Centre has been started at SRMIST. IEI has done yeoman service and will be helpful in providing skill-based engineers to solve rising employment issues. It will be a big contribution to India."

Vice-Chancellor of SRMIST, Dr Sandeep Sancheti, said, "There are challenges that many engineers face on a daily basis. To overcome this, we need handholding, continuous education, and profession connect. These things can be fulfilled only through such professional bodies. Engineers should have access to technology and connection with industry people. Therefore this Centre will redefine what we need to do." He also suggested a future collaboration with IEI.

Dr T M Gunaraja, FIE, President, The Institution of Engineers (India), said, "The whole world is depended on India and India is depended on Universities like SRM, which has grown globally. Therefore all the activities that happen in Kattankulathur Local Centre should be focused on strengthening the Center. Understanding engineering alone is not enough it is important that students understand the importance of the industry too."

Also present on the occasion were Dr S Dhanalakshmi, FIE, Honorary Secretary, IE(I) and Er P Gomathi Nayagam, MIE, Honorary Secretary, IE(I), Tamilnadu State Centre.
