Fighting a battle against corrosion

As the oil and gas sector operations majorly deals with highly flammable materials which if not managed properly may lead to catastrophe. Therefore, the health and integrity of assets play the most important role which is threatened by corrosion.

Recognising corrosion mitigation as major health and integrity issue of assets, a movement titled 'Jung se Jung – Battle against corrosion' was started by GAIL in collaboration with NACE India and NIGIS on a quarterly basis, since October 2016.

With regard to the movement, Jung se Jung – a seminar was organised by GAIL along with CORCON-2018 on October 3, at Jaipur Exhibition and Convention Centre (JECC).

Delegates from the oil and gas industry, from national as well as international organisations participated in the seminar.

The seminar was inaugurated by Dr Ashutosh Karnatak, Director (projects), GAIL (India) Ltd, who in his keynote address stressed on the need of migration from 'reactive' corrosion management to 'proactive' corrosion management for ensuring better safety and integrity of asset.

Jeffery A Didas, President, NACE international along with the Chairman-NIGIS, N Manohar Rao, who were also present during the inaugural session, interacted with the delegates.

A detailed presentation on internal and external corrosion was made by NACE International subject matter experts (SMEs), Dr Carlos and Hasan Sabri at the seminar.

Seminar ended with panel discussion on 'Corrosion mitigation and control during design and construction stage' wherein senior management executives of GAIL, IOCL, Reliance and SMEs shared their vast experience on the subject and also answered the questions of the delegates.
