FB stalker who drove woman to suicide lands up at funeral, thrashed

The accused 57-year-old Asish Chakraborty alias Babun was Facebook friend of the victim and he had started threatening her after her marriage was arranged with someone else.

Police said that the 19-year-old Payel Das had committed suicide by hanging herself from the ceiling of their house at D-block in Ghola. Though she had not left any suicide note, her family members had claimed that she had committed suicide after being threatened by Babun.

Babun, who had posed himself to be a constable of the Kolkata Police, came in touch with Payel through the social networking site three years ago and it led to a good friendship. Later they had also started speaking over phone. But the accused had started behaving in a different manner after knowing that her marriage was fixed.

It is learnt that he had not even disclosed his age to Payel and used to fool her saying that he knows many senior officers of the city police. He also used to threaten her saying that he may also cause harm to her family members.

The victim had told some of her close friends that the man, who actually used to run a private coaching centre, had threatened her asking her not to marry anyone else.

On Wednesday morning Babun reached the victim’s house with a wreath when her funeral ceremony was going on. Some friends of the victim suspected the man and dialed in his mobile phone from the victim’s cell phone. They caught the man immediately when his phone started ringing. The man also got puzzled finding an incoming call from Payel’s cell phone number.

The victim’s family members started beating him up and handed him over to the police. The victim’s father lodged a complaint against him with Ghola police station Wednesday evening and he was subsequently arrested.
