Father attempts to sell daughter at Bolpur

At a time when the state government and several NGOs have expressed concern over the rise in the number of human trafficking, a father tired to sell her daughter at Bolpur in Birbhum district.

The girl has reported the matter to the SDO and sought protection. However, the girl has gone off the grid since lodging the complaint. The police have started an investigation.

The girl, a resident of Netaji Road in Bolpur, alleged that her father tried to sell her to some people recently. He took her one of his friend’s house at Andal in Burdwan district and tried to sell her. Sensing that something wrong was going to happen, the girl ran away and came to her native place.

She lodged a complaint with the SDO and requested him to give her protection as she anticipated that those who had gathered at her father’s friend’s house would come to Bolpur to take her away. The police began investigation and detained her father but he denied the allegations. Mysteriously though, the girl disappeared after lodging complaint and police have lodged a manhunt to trace the girl.

A senior official of social welfare department said the chief minister had expressed concern over the rise in the number of human trafficking.

It may be recalled that a former president of Durbar Mahila Samanvya Samity was murdered some days back and two girls who were rescued were kept under her custody at a destitute home.
