Farmer’s finger chopped off by miscreants over land dispute in Malda

Some miscreants have cut off a finger of a farmer following some dispute over sowing of land. The incident that occurred at Vaishnabnagar area of Malda triggered tension in the locality.

On the basis of the complaint lodged by the victim’s family members, police have started an investigation. Police said that Sudhir Mondal, a resident of Vaishnabnagar was trying to fetch water by digging a narrow channel from a local water body.

Some local people opposed the farmer. The farmer tried to convince the accused but they became infuriated and abused the farmer.

An altercation broke out between the farmer and the accused, one of whom suddenly fetched a knife and pounced on Mondal.

The accused fled the spot immediately after the incident. The local people recovered the farmer who was writhing in pain. He was rushed to Malda Medical College and Hospital. According to the doctors in the hospital, a finger of the victim was completely cut off in the incident. However, his condition is stated to be stable.

As per the preliminary investigation, police suspect that there was a past rivalry between the farmer and the accused who were also residents of the same area. The incident took an ugly turn on Wednesday.

Police have interrogated some local people in this connection so far. According to the police, the victim had urged the local people to dig a narrow channel to fetch water from the nearby water body which would be immensely helpful for the cultivation of lands not only for the victims but others as well.

It was learnt that the three persons who allegedly attacked the farmer opposed the move. The matter remained unsettled for the last few months.

When the victim again tried to convince them, they became infuriated and attacked the victim. Police are conducting raids to nab the culprits who are at large since the incident took place.
