Fan falls on students during IIEST convocation

A whirling fan fell and hurt three students during the convocation ceremony of the prestigious Institute of Engineering Science and Technology (IIEST), Shibpur, on Friday.

The three students of civil engineering department, who had received their degrees, were waiting for the ceremony to get over when the fan suddenly fell on their heads, IIEST officials said.

One of them, Abhijit Mandal received a cut on his neck from the blade of the fan, while two others Arghadeep Das and Devarun Banerjee were left with pain on their head and neck areas.

All the students were released after a first-aid in the campus, they said.

The ceremony continued after the accident, which created panic among the students and some of them even left the convocation hall.

IIEST registrar Biman Bandyopadhyay said action will be taken against those found guilty of making faulty arrangements.

Established in 1856, the Bengal Engineering Science and University (BESU) was upgraded to IIEST two years back by the Centre. Located in Howrah, adjoining Kolkata, this was the institute’s second convocation ceremony.
