Family of four found dead inside residence

Police recovered the dead bodies of four members of a family from inside their house at Madan Mohan Colony of Chandannagar in Hooghly on Monday morning. The incident triggered tension among the residents of the locality.

The deceased were identified as Surajit Mondal (38), a local fruit seller, his wife Ashima Mondal (30), their daughter Sneha Mondal (11) and son Atanu Mondal (9). Surajit’s mother Fulu Mondal on Monday morning found that the body of her son was hanging from the ceiling, while his wife was lying dead on the floor and the two children were on the bed. She then informed the matter to the local people, who in turn informed the matter to the police.

Police recovered the dead bodies and sent them for post mortem examinations. According to the preliminary examination, police suspect that the fruit seller might have killed his wife and two children before committing suicide by hanging himself from the ceiling. Police suspect that Ashima and two others were throttled to death.

In the course of the investigation, police also found out that the fruit seller was suffering from depression after he failed to repay a loan to another person from Howrah. Surajit had borrowed around Rs 2 lakh from another businessman a few months ago when he was admitted to a hospital after suffering a heart attack. But the fruit seller could not repay the loan as the financial health of his business had reduced drastically.

A few days ago, the person had visited his house in Chandannagar and gave him an ultimatum. He also threatened him that he would have to face dire consequences if he did not repay the loan. Police have started a probe and are interrogating the other family members of the deceased in this connection.
