Fame is intoxicating: Hema Malini

From your debut in 1968 to 2011, Tell Me O Khuda, how have you evolved as an actor?
I have learned the nuances of Bollywood and it has been a great experience for me. Most importantly I have gained a lot of love and affection from people. Everywhere I go they recognise me, which makes me happy, be it the young or the old.

Counted as a veteran in Bollywood. Any piece of advice you would like to give to the newbies.
They have to strictly understand one thing, that it’s an extremely hardworking job and is tough and difficult. But one should not get attached to it. Being attached often makes them depressed. Which also goes for any field not specific to Bollywood. Like when I was number one during my stint in the industry, suddenly someone else came and took over my position. They should understand the reality that all this sustains for a while.

If Hema Malini is reborn again, what are the things you would like to do which you could not do in your youth?

There are a lot of things on my list, good, bad and evil which I really can’t share but definitely want to do when I am reborn.

How is your equation with Dharmendra and sons?
Very fine relationship. Its a wonderful relationship we share like any other normal couples do.

Do you have more friends or foes in the industry?

I have no real friends in the industry. It’s all too professional here. Foes I do not have an idea. Though Rekha has been with me as a friend through thick and thin during my career.

What are your upcoming Bollywood projects?

I am working on some scripts currently. Apart form that no work as such.

If ever you produce a film, which Khan would you like to cast?

It’s not necessary that I have to take only Khans, I can work without them also. Hamara apna identity nahi hai kya?

How has your stint as a politician been?
I was in Rajya Sabha for seven years and on the last day while I gave my farewell speech, I said this time in parliament is very interesting and I love it. But it is not permanent and I have to get out of it.

When do you intend to retire and what are your plans post that?

Retirement for me is still far off. Right now I want to do more mature roles and if it suits me today, am all ready to do it. Am hoping a good offer comes my way soon. In our industry there are films made only for the young people, unlike Hollywood where they films for the adults too catering to women and
centered around them.
