Fall Guy! Kirori Mal principal compares injured student to late Divya Bharti!

In a bid to cover up the poor maintenance of the hostel building, acting principal of Kirori Mal College SP Gupta has blamed a balcony crash that grievously injured a student on the ‘boisterous mood’ of its hostel residents. The principal said: ‘The incident is similar to film star Divya Bharti’s fall from her balcony.’ The then rising Bollywood star had met with a mysterious death from a balcony fall on 5 April 1993.

Giving his version of the accident on Friday of hostel resident Sahi Ram Golia, who is doing BSc in Physical Sciences and hails from Rajasthan, Gupta said: ‘The balcony could have fallen due to the pressure he put on the parapet as he talked excitedly with a friend standing below in the garden.’ Golia came crashing down as a part of the balcony fell off and the debris landed on him.

Some students of the hostel, on condition of anonymity, said, ‘The  hostel is in dilapidated state and we have repeatedly registered complaints with the college administration for upkeep of the building, but to no avail. In fact, we also lodged complaints about the cracked balconies, which pose danger to our lives but the college management won’t listen to us.’

The college is passing through a period of uncertainty with its long-serving principal having been placed under suspension and a new team replacing the other functionaries including the hostel warden. ‘In the power tussle between the college management and the suspended principal, it’s the college which is suffering,’ said the students.
