Fake discom officers held for extorting money from residents

A group of men who pretended to be officials of BSES and blackmailed people by accusing them of stealing power was arrested on Wednesday. Gang leader Rahul Sharma alias Brijesh Sharma was arrested along with one of his accomplice, Rajesh, after a coordinated operation by Delhi Police, BSES and residents of RK Puram and Sant Nagar in south Delhi. While Sharma was sent to Tihar Jail for 14 days, his accomplice was remanded in custody two days. Police are still looking for the other members of the gang.
“Posing as BSES enforcement officials, the gang used to blackmail well-off residents by telling them that their electricity meter was tampered with, which amounts to power theft and not only attracts a heavy penalty but also imprisonment,” said a statement by the BSES.
