Failing maths exam drives 17-year-old student to suicide

Allegedly after failing in his maths exam, a class IX student of a private school committed suicide by hanging himself from a ceiling fan in East Delhi’s Kalyanpuri area on Tuesday. However, the exact cause behind taking this extreme step is yet to be confirmed in the probe.

The incident took place at around 3.30 pm when the victim, identified as Ankit (17), a resident of Block 19, Kalyanpuri area locked himself after returning from the school. According to his mother, he was depressed since he returned and without interaction with anyone at home he locked himself in his room.

She told police that soon after he locked the door from inside, she rushed to his room and knocked several times but he did not respond.

After failing to get any response, she managed to break open the door, only to find him hanging. She immediately made a call to the police control room and also informed her husband, who immediately rushed to the spot. “He was rushed to the nearby Lal Bahadur Shashtri hospital, where he was declared dead on arrival. The team that reached the house did not recover any suicide note but later learnt that Ankit was depressed as he failed his maths exam,” a police official close to the investigation said. His friends and school authorities have been contacted and their statement has been recorded.

A case has been registered at Kalyanpuri police station and probe is on from all plausible angles. Meanwhile, his body was handed-over to his family members after post-mortem, police said.
