Experts seek govt intervention to counter growing obesity

On the eve of World Obesity Day, Belle Vue Clinic organised a workshop here on Sunday where eminent medical experts on bariatric surgery, nutrition, physical training, orthopaedics, diabetes, gynaecology and plastic surgery sought government intervention to counter the growing problems related to obesity.   

The experts recommended immediate steps to counter obesity as it may become a menace in future.  Having signed the UN Charter on the recommendation of WHO in 2011, governments in all across the world are committed to counter obesity by 2025. 

However, the target seems next to impossible as the problem of obesity is growing day by day. 

While speaking on the occasion, Dr Manoj Khanna, President of Aesthetic Surgery Society in India and Dr Sarfaraz J Baig, Bariatric Surgeon and Director of Bariatric and Metabolism Initiative at Belle Vue Clinic said obesity has become a major problem in Indian. Other experts including Dr Subrata Dey, Paediatric Endocrinologist, Dr Rahul Jain, General Physician, Dr Rupnarayan Bhattacharya, Orthopaedist, Dr Rajiv Agarwal, Fertility Specialist, Smt Vasudha Goenka, Nutritionist, Dr Shaikat Banerjee, Physiotherapist and Dr M Zaman, Anaesthetist also spoke on the occasion. 

The experts said that obesity was a common problem particularly in urban India. It is affecting almost 1/3 of the population. It is also affecting a large number of school children in urban areas where 15% of them are overweight, according to reports. Obesity also kills indirectly through various diseases like diabetes, high blood pressure, sleep apnea (snoring), liver disease and cancer.
