Excise officer held for cheating

A central excise and customs inspector was arrested along with his associate for allegedly impersonating as sales tax officer and cheating owners of wedding halls in the capital to the tune of Rs 94,000, police said on Monday.

Parmod Kumar Gupta, an inspector with central Excise & Customs, Meerut Division and his associate Abhishek Rai were taken into custody on Sunday. They were arrested based on a complaint filed by manager of a motel on Rohtak road that Parmod and Rai came to his office posing as sales tax officers and wanted to see bills for scrutiny.

The manager got suspicious and contacted some service tax officials who informed that there were no such official with them.

During interrogation, it was revealed that Parmod and his associate have cheated many wedding venue owners impersonating as service tax officers. The deputy manager of a wedding hall Cosmic Palms also identified them and said that they cheated him of Rs 10,000 on Saturday.

‘The accused have disclosed to have cheated 12 other wedding venue owners in Delhi. Owner of Dashmesh wedding venue in Bhajanpura has also identified them,’ a senior police official said.
