India Habitat Centre put together the seven essence of music on the platter for the people of the Capital. Seven Essence was the platform where seven artists spread the fragrance of their art on the same platform. Essence comes all the aspects of Indian music and dance. Instrumental music consists of different forms like blowing, bowing, plucking and strokes.
We wouldn’t need to tell you how much we enjoyed it once we give you an insight to the Seven Essence.
Rupak Kulkarni is one with the magic breath. As a child with music blown into his breath by his father late Pt Malhar Rao Kulkarni, Kulkarni has blossomed under the finest tutelage of flute legend Padma Vibhushan Pt Hari Prasad Chaurasia to become an outstanding exponent of Maihar Gharana. His first solo flute performance was at the age of 11 at Darbar Hall, Baroda, where he spellbound around 1500 music lovers.
Akram Khan, the one who has his beats at the tip of his fingers, is a top grade artist from All India Radio. Representing India at many international events, he has also been a part of the celebration of India’s 50th independence anniversary in India and abroad.
Murad Ali, the sixth generation sarangi player from the musical Moradabad tradition. He is one that started performing at the age of ten! He has bagged many awards along with the very prestigious Ustad Bismillah Khan Award by the Sangeet Natak Academy and Sanskriti by APJ Abdul Kalam. Fateh Ali Khan also belongs to the Muradabad Gharana, and is also an eminent sitar player. Coming from a family of sarangi players, he found his joy in sitar. On vocal and harmonium was Shuheb Hasan, who also belongs to the Moradabad gharana.
The Seven Essence couldn’t just be comprised of music. So we also had the joy of experiencing Mahua Shankar, a disciple of the kathak maestro Padma Vibhushan Pt Birju Maharaj. When one says that some qualitites are god gifted, they have Mahua Shankar as an example. She was one who started dancing from the age of five! Another student of Pt Birju Maharaj was also there to make the whole ride a treat, Nupur Shankar. She has been trained in Thumri by him.
The event saw, heard, felt and lived the few hours lost in the essence of music, dance and recital. First there was a duet by Murad Ali Khan, Fateh Ali khan and Ustad Akram Khan. Mahua Shankar then gave a solo Kathak performance. You can imagine the joy of watching an authority in kathak dance with live music being given by the lovely artistes. To overwhelm the audience, there was a flute solo by Pt Rupak Kulkarni. The story teller Nupur Shankar was followed by the best of all the performances. The seven essence performed together on one stage.
The magic created by the seven was obviously amazing! Those who attended it must have been rejoicing it.. and those who missed it, well.
