Errant motorist mows down rickshaw puller in GTB Enclave area, arrested

A 50-year-old rickshaw puller was mowed down by a speeding vehicle in Northeast Delhi’s GTB Enclave area in the wee hours on Friday. The police said the deceased was identified as Md Yaseen. He was returning home when the accident took place, police said. They added that the errant vehicle driver, identified as Gaurav Gupta, was arrested later on Friday.

The police said the accident took place around 1am at the Damodar Park Road when Gupta, driving a Mahindra Quanto, hit Yaseen. As a result, Yaseen was thrown a few metres away from his rickshaw.
According to the police, Gupta fled the spot, leaving Yaseen bleeding profusely.

A passerby made a PCR call, after which Yaseen was taken to a nearby hospital, where he succumbed to injuries, said a police officer. The police said based on the passerby’s statement, an FIR was registered against Gupta.

“The accused has been arrested. A case under Section 279 (rash driving or driving on public way) and 304A (culpable homicide not amounting to murder) of the IPC has been registered against the accused at the GTB Nagar police station. Further investigation is on,” said a senior officer of the North-east district. Meanwhile, Yaseen’s post-mortem has been conducted and his body has been handed over to his family.
