Engineer murder: Three youth arrested

Three youth were arrested from South 24 Parganas and Kolkata in connection with the murder of 30-year-old engineer near Maddox Square. Three more accused are still at large. It may be recalled that the engineer Romit Mondal was beaten following a scuffle when he went out to have biriyani with his friend near Maddox Square on Friday night. He had succumbed to his injuries in the wee hours on Tuesday in a private hospital.

A senior police officer said the three youth – Subhomoy Jana alias Babu, Ranadip Sarkar alias Vishal and Surajit Tikadar - were remanded in the custody of the police till June 29 and the search for the other three is on.

Police had got hold of footage of a surveillance camera which was installed in a residential apartment at a distance of around 75 metre from the spot. Thus the faces of the accused were unclear. But the police had found the accused leaving the place on two scooties. The scooties had matched with the description of the friends of the victim.

The police then went through footages of the surveillance cameras installed at different intersections. Six youth were found passing the area on the same two scooties caught on footage of the camera at Hazra crossing and the picture was clear.

The police had even got the registration numbers of the two-wheelers. Hence it became easier for the police to make a breakthrough. The police conducted raids in the houses of the accused and arrested the trio.

The police have confirmed that Romit received injuries on his head when one of the accused had thrown a paver block. There was a clash between the six youth, those who came on the scooties, and three friends of Romit when they were having biryani in the car on Earle Street near Maddox Square.
The accused has chased them when the victim and his friends were trying to leave the area in their car. The window panes of the car were open.

Thus, the paver block went inside the car when a youth sitting pillion on a scooty had thrown at the victim when both the scooty and the car were on move. It hit Romit’s head. The car and the paver block were sent for forensic tests.
