In a bid to check the sale of unhygienic food, the East Delhi Municipal Corporation [EDMC] conducted raids on Sunday in various parts of the city and challaned 484 people traders.

‘The raids were conducted to check selling of unhygienic food, drink and ice cream to prevent spread of diseases caused by unhygienic food and water in summer and monsoon,’ said S S Yadav, Commissioner, EDMC. The raids were conducted in the various localities of Shahdara [South] and Shahdara [North] zones. In these raids seven sugarcane crushers, 19 pushcarts and 112 food items were seized. EDMC prosecuted 484 illegal outlets during the raid.

‘The small vendors selling water and food items are mushrooming in every part of the city, targeting health hazards to children,’ said Mahek Singh, Chairman of Standing Committee, EDMC. ‘We have directed the officials to take action against all types of food and water vendors and compel them to get proper license,’ added Singh.

As per the records with EDMC, there were only 241 restaurants and dhabas registered in its jurisdiction, but in reality there are thousands of restaurants and dhabas in the area. The officers have challaned over 654 restaurants/ dhabas in EDMC area since April 2012.

The matter of unhygienic food and water was also raised in the meeting of the house in which councillors had advocated for easy licensing policy so that small vendors could not be targeted unnecessarily.
