Election mgmt: Burdwan adjudged best district

Burdwan has been elected as the best district in the country in managing 2016 Assembly election by the Election Commission of India (ECI).

The award will be handed over to the District Magistrate Soumitra Mohan by the CEO on Jaunary 25 which is National Voters Day.

Mohan submitted a presentation on election management before the ECI at Ashoka Hotel in New Delhi on Friday evening. The District Magistrates of all the 535 districts in the country were present in New Delhi on Friday to make their presentation before the ECI. Fifteen districts in the country have been nominated for awards in different categories. In election management category, Burdwan is the only district in the country that has got nomination.

Burdwan district has enrolled 1.28 lakh new voters of which the number of women voters is 6,000 more than the male voters.

Before the 2016 Assembly election, the district had started two systems. The first one was Polling Area Survey Apps (PASA). It was primarily a GPS system. By using this, police and administrative officials got every detail of a booth by a single click.

The second was for the benefit of the voters called the queue system. By sending SMS to a stipulated number, the voters could know about the queue in front of any polling station. This helped them to select the timing when they could go to the polling station to cast their votes. The ECI has appreciated this effort and lauded Mohan.
