Election dates announced for CU-affiliated colleges

Elections in various colleges under the Calcutta University will be held in four phases. The decision was taken at a meeting in the Calcutta University on Thursday. Calcutta University has, however, said that it is up to the colleges if they will submit the nominations of candidates through an online process.

The state government had earlier stated that the college elections would be held between November and January. The Calcutta University authorities on Thursday held meeting with administrative officials of various colleges under its fold. It was decided in the meeting that college elections would be held with the help of the police.

In the 65 colleges in Kolkata under Calcutta University, the election will be held in four phases on January 27, 28, 30, 31.

Elections would be held in all the colleges in Howrah on January 19. In Hooghly district there are 7 colleges which are under the Calcutta University. The number is 39 in case of South 24 Parganas. In both the districts, the elections would be held on January 31. There are altogether 46 colleges in the two districts.

The college authorities will decide the election schedule. The colleges will take the final decision if the nominations of candidates would be filled up online.

According to the senior officials of the Calcutta University, elections in colleges would be held amidst tight security. Some have, however, alleged that if the nominations were not submitted online there is always a possibility of irregularities in the elections. It may be mentioned in previous occasions trouble broke out at colleges during the elections.
