Elderly woman thrashed, raped in Birbhum

An elderly woman was beaten up and then allegedly raped by some robbers at Birbhum’s Mayureswar on Thursday.

The local residents were shocked after the incident came to light. The woman, a resident of Mayureswar was rushed to a private hospital.

Her condition was really critical as doctors kept her in the Intensive Care Unit. Local residents and the relatives of victim, rushed to the spot.

Police have started an investigation. Some people were detained in connection with the case. They are being interrogated.

“But we believe they were not the prime accused. The prime accused escaped from the spot,” said an investigating officer.

The police learnt that the miscreants had cut the grill of the balcony and entered in the house. Then they threatened the woman at gunpoint. They took the key of the almirah from her and opened the lock.

They took valuables including ornaments and put them in a sack. The woman tried to restrain them, but they beat her up and allegedly raped her.

“She was groaning. By the time her family including son, daughter-in-law and grandson came, the robbers managed to escape,” said a police officer.

“Her son then started to shout. The neighbour rushed to the house. They found that the woman was injured and sexually assaulted; she was lying on the floor.

“However, the patrolling jeep of the police detained some people. They told the investigators that the dacoits had gone towards railway station. A sniffer dog started to run towards the railway station, but lost the trail,” the officer said.

“I think we have tracked those culprits. We need some time to arrest those.

They were probably an old gang operating in this area. We got some important information from some source. Those accused will be arrested soon,” the officer added.
