An elderly person from Sagardighi went missing after falling in the river while being ferried by a country-made boat at Sagardighi in Murshidabad on Thursday morning.

Police said that the victim Rehesan Seikh (52), a resident Koylapar village was going to Kabilpur in a boat when the accident took place. The local people alleged that the boatmen never tried to save the victim after they found that he had fallen into the river. After being informed, the police reached the spot and conducted a search operation with the help of divers. But they failed to find any trace of the victim till late Thursday evening.

Some of the local people who were travelling in the boat told the police that despite of the repeated pleas, the boatmen took many passengers and also some cattle in the boat. Before the boat had reached the bank Seikh suddenly fell in the river as the boat was overcrowded. An eyewitness said that he lost balance and fell in the river but no one tried to rescue the victim and he was swept away.
