Elderly couple found dead

Mystery shrouded over the death of an elderly couple whose bodies were found inside their house at Indrapuri area under Ghola in North 24-Parganas on Wednesday.

Police said that the victims, Kalipada Das (75) and his wife Gita Das (70) were found dead on their beds in two separate rooms. Both of them were strangled to death. According to the preliminary investigation, it is suspected that they were murdered but the motive behind the murder is yet to be ascertained.  The couple used to live on the first floor of a two storey building at Indrapuri. The maid-servant of Das family went to their house in the morning and found the door locked from outside. She repeatedly knocked the door but there was no response. She then pushed a window that laid open and found Kalipada lying dead on his bed. She informed the matter to the local people who, in turn, informed the local police.  Police reached the spot and found the couple dead in two adjacent rooms.

There were injury marks on the throat of both the victims and ropes were tied around their neck. Their faces were smeared with blood which makes the investigating officer believe that they were strangled to death. Police are investigating all the possibilities behind death of the couple. Police also found an ransacked almirah in the house.

It is yet to determined whether miscreants wanted to loot valuables and end up killing the couple.

Police, however, are not ruling out the possibility of murder which could be a fall out of a family feud.

The local people told the police that victims’ son Shyamal Kumar Das died few months ago. Shyamal’s wife Manju Das stays in her parental house at Madhyamgram.

She has one son and a daughter. They are being interrogated.  The investigating officers will also probe Das’s tenant staying in the nearby locality.

He had allegedly refused to vacate the house before February 17 as both the parties entered into an agreement. Police are inquiring into the matter.
