Eight cops on partial suspension over illegal borewell digging

At least eight police officials, including two sub-inspectors have been sent to lines (partial suspension) after work on an illegalĀ  borewell was found to have been conducted under their nose in Mehrauli area.

Sources in the Delhi police said that there are also possibilities that a few police officials from the police station are involved in the incident and that a disciplinary enquiry has been initiated into the matter.

On Tuesday, at about 10.10 pm in the night, the assistant commissioner of police, (ACP operations), south Delhi received a tip-off that illegal borewell digging was taking place in a farmhouse in the Mehrauli area. A raid was conducted by the ACP himself and he later made a call to the local police. 'The action was taken against the police station officials because the illegal work was going on under their nose and they didn't stop it,' police officials said.

The two sub-inspectors have been identified as Lal Singh and Pradeep Rawat. No action, however, was taken against the station house officer who is responsible for the supervision of the area.

Sources said that one of the reasons why illegal digging for water is being done in the area is the depleting water levels and the activities of water mafia. 'There is a strong water mafia which is active in the area but they go scot-free. They dig for water and sell it outside. Police is not paying any attention to that too,' sources said.
