EDMC demands land for office

Municipal Corporation (EDMC) has demanded land from Delhi Development Authority (DDA) to construct its head office in Shahdara on the design of Civic Centre, the headquarters of erstwhile Municipal Corporation of Delhi.

'We have written to DDA to provide us five acres of land in Shahdara Central Business District to construct the head office of EDMC,' said S S Yadav, Commissioner of EDMC. The present office provided by the government is not sufficient to accommodate necessary staff and political office bearers, Yadav added.

When asked about the cost of the project, Yadav replied, 'After getting the land we will appoint a consultant to finalise design and budget.' At present, the corporation is being run from the three floors of Udyog Bhawan in Patpargunj allotted to EDMC by Delhi State Industrial and Infrastructural Corporation (DSIIDC). The BJP councillors have protested several times against the poor infrastructure and less space in the building.

'We have also convinced the authorities to give us one more floor in the building to accommodate deliberative wing. We will soon be entrusted with it,' added Yadav. Meanwhile, the renovation of the auditorium is being carried out. The commissioner has also written to DDA asking them to provide the completion certificate of the building and NOC of fire department as sought by BJP councillors alleging that building does not have necessary clearances.

MCD had transferred two of its properties in prime locations, Kashmere Gate and Lajpat Nagar.
