EDMC clueless about shops running in its area

East Delhi Municipal Corporation (EDMC) is not aware about the number of shops and commercial establishments operating in its area. The shocking revelation was made by EDMC municipal commissioner S Kumaraswamy in the standing committee meeting on Thursday.

‘We don’t have any data on the number of shops and commercial establishments operating in the area of East Delhi Municipal Corporation. We have not conducted any survey after the new corporation came into existence,’ Kumaraswamy said.

According to the rules, commercial establishments cannot operate without a trade license issued by the corporation. The issuing of the license is also one of the main sources of revenue for the civic bodies in the city.

In a written reply, the trade license department of EDMC also submitted that some of the big commercial establishments are being run without the approval of the fire department and are not paying any tax to the corporation.  ‘The records show that only 671 shops are situated in the trans-Yamuna region but in reality the number runs into lakhs. EDMC is loosing a huge amount of revenue,’ Mahak Singh, member EDMC’s standing committee, said.

‘These shops are being run in connivance with the officers of the corporation and the money goes into their pockets. This amount could be realised as revenue to bail out EDMC,’ he added. The members of the committee also demanded regularisation of weekly markets in the area.

Standing committee chair Sanjay Surjan asked the commissioner to make an extensive survey of the commercial establishments in EDMC area and ensure that all of them get trade license.
